This report is in
response to the
misreporting of the Memorial Day Weekend Off-Road Event at the
Redneck Yacht Club in Punta Gorda, FL. The article was in the Sunday
edition of the St. Pete Times
Floridian Section on June 14th 2009.

Massive Mud Trucks, Jeeps Galore, Swamp Buggies and ATV's came out of
the woodwork at 800 acres of off-road park at the Redneck Yacht Club in
Punta Gorda, FL during Memorial Day Weekend. An estimated 30,000-50,000
came to usher in a weekend of camping, mudding, and cutting loose over
the holiday weekend at the first Big Event hosted by the off road park.
The park is new and consists of numerous mud holes and trails for a
variety of vehicles and atv's as well as a racing circle and and wash
station that is above and beyond the norms when it comes to off-road
parks.
From the crack of dawn Friday, the gates were open and welcoming guests
with lines waiting to get in miles at length. Eager for a weekend of
off-road awesomeness filled with horsepower, trail riding, mud racing,
camping, barbecue, and live music- we all came together to get under
the Florida sun, and partied for a weekend. Yes, it was a bit of a
party
atmosphere, but I really wouldn't want to have it any other way for
a Memorial day weekend.
We went with 2 groups who camped in
different locations. Families, friends, sons and daughters, aged from
65-15, all
came out to soak up the Family Friendly, All American, Off-Road Park
atmosphere
there that so many media outlets "left out of their articles and
reports" to the point where this article is written in response to
their blatant unprofessionalism in reporting a holiday event. We
didnt have any problems, concerns or issues with what happened over the
weekend, and have had the same experiences at off-road parks across the
country.
The local media outlets let their Front Page Bias show- by the
article that ran in the St. Pete Times on June 14, 2009 in the
Floridan section. The article focused on some 18-20 something young men
who
brought stripper poles who "Only came for the girls" and 3 young
ladies (18-20) who wore bikinis
all weekend, when SO MUCH MORE HAPPENED AND TOOK PLACE. In fact the
articles were sexist, slanted, semi degrading and tasteless. In our
opinion, it looks like the writer seemed a little too excited and
distracted by the
stripper poles and co-eds in bikinis to see anything else that
weekend or as he says "There's no shortage of beer, big trucks, or
testosterone.....and a different type of thrill after dark."
That caption could
have easily read "There's no shortage of Big Trucks, Jeeps, or ATV's as
well as live music and dancing when the driving stops after dark." But
the reporter took another route which followed some co-ed
aged girls and guys
around all weekend, probably hoping to catch a glimpse. There were a lot of
people there and you would think a "Seasoned Reporter" would take more time to fully take in the event, but Hey, hanging out with hot women in bikinis and
playing in the Mud is part of it- so we'll pick up where his
professionalism left off and report the rest of the story instead of making one up.
There was no shortage of big trucks, jeeps, swamp buggies and atv's
over the holiday weekend at the State's newest off-road motorsports
park,
in fact, this place is an ATV wonderland! Second maybe to some state
parks, the Redneck Yacht club has brought together some old farm land
and made a place where people can get off-road legally within a
controlled environment, jam packed with action and adventure. With numerous types of terrain, holes, and
miles of trail riding- it took over half the day to cover the property
and the other half to take in the sights. Word is, they are also going to be adding
rock trails and expanding their family section too.
The park had sections set aside for camping, vendors, parking, family only zones designed for kids, as well
as an outdoor stage with live bands and music when all the horsepower
slowed after dark. Families had Mom's and Dad's in their trucks,
and sons and daughters on Atv's riding around the park in tow. Die
hards had their mud machines roaring through deep holes with the crowd
of spectators ringing the hole yelling when one of the rigs made it
through. People were rating runs with hand drawn placards on a scale of
1-10 (one run we scored an 8 and a 10) while taking it all in from atop
15ft tall swamp buggies designed to go through the deepest of holes
with ease. There were even events for different classes of trucks in a
mud circle track even pitting swamp buggy vs swamp buggy on the mud
tracks.
That was the scene, not some debaucherous teenagers grinding on
stripper poles all weekend, or a few guys who only came to see chicks-
you didnt even see the poles until 10-11pm when small parties around
the campground started popping up. At the gate they searched vehicles
with dogs for drugs and glass bottles to ensure safety, and rangers and
police officers rode around the property all weekend making sure all
was on the up and up. We have seen a lot worse while tailgating a local
sporting events, at concerts, or at
the local pub down the street in any neighborhood from Punta Gorda to
Destin.
So, for those who feel short changed from the media's reports we hope
this sheds a bit more light on the subject. These events are fun, and
are a great spot to get out from behind your desk or escape from the
mundane and get your feet dirty. We enjoyed the weekend at the Redneck
Yacht club and apperciate our hosts, only wishing to see ya'll again
sometime soon. We see such prejudice on a regular basis from those who
aren't familiar with going outside much, or are afraid of dirt or
getting a bit dirty, or those who never seen
co-ed's in bikinis. So its up to us to get the right story out, and we
will be happy to do so. We
fully enjoy these events and we bring our children and families with
us, so to be fair this is our report and we're sticking to
it. Superior
